Oral Maxillofacial Radiology

Oral and maxillofacial radiology is the specialty of dentistry and discipline of radiology concerned with the production and interpretation of radiographic images, including CT and MRI scans that are used for the diagnosis and management of diseases, disorders and conditions of the mouth, face and jaws. Our Dental Health Center in La Jolla includes a broad array of dental radiology imaging services.

In our clinic these services include:

  • Surgical planning for impacted and wisdom teeth, tooth extraction and other types of oral surgery that may require sedation or general anesthesia
  • Treating facial pain (including problems related to TMJ abnormalities and disorders)
  • Oral cancer diagnosis/treatment planning
  • Evaluating tumors, cysts, developmental abnormalities and trauma in the maxillofacial region
  • Evaluating effects of bisphosphonates and osteonecrosis of the jaws
  • Planning orthodontic treatment
  • Assessing endodontic or failed endodontic lesions
  • Evaluating soft tissue calcifications in the head and neck
  • Assessing airways and sleep apnea conditions

Every patient is comprehensively evaluated before, during and after undergoing radiation treatment or chemotherapy. Their dental status is thoroughly assessed, and dental treatment recommendations are provided in coordination with the radiotherapists at UCSD Health. Our patients are closely and continuously monitored during and after their chemoradiation therapy. Thanks to our extensive training and experience we understand the oral and maxillofacial changes that occur in patients undergoing radiation therapy and chemotherapy and their special needs.
