3D printing is the new disruptive industry in manufacturing and will revolutionize the way we will practice digital dentistry in the near future. This course is an introduction to understanding all aspects of the 3D printing process in the dental clinic and dental laboratory and also a prerequisite course to the different digital dentistry modules for Digital dentures, Surgical guides for implant guided surgery, Smile design for temporary and permanent veneers, crowns and bridges, implant-supported prosthetics, Diagnostic models and Occlusal Splints. The areas of Data Capturing through all different IOS available systems and CBCT systems will be addressed and well as the pros and cons, considerations for the scanning process, preferences of scanners and scanning software. Printing directly from converted to STL files from DICOM CBCT files will be introduced and also the understanding of different file types and techniques for exporting, packaging, storing files, etc. The treatment planning phase and digital file design as well as an overview of available design software will be thoroughly covered. Techniques for 3D printing, the use the different printers, overview of available materials for 3D printing, post-processing the 3D prints (wash and cure) and the review of clinical cases on how the 3D printed guides are actually used for the guided implant surgery, digital dentures, diagnostic models, smile design, temporary and permanent veneers, crowns and bridges and implant-supported prosthetics will all be discussed.

April 15th:

Data Capturing through all different IOS available systems and CBCT systems.

Morning:

Cone Beam CT and its capabilities for more detailed imaging information and communication have changed the landscape of dentistry.

  • An introduction to understanding all aspects of the DICOMS acquisition.
  • Learn how to reduce scattering artifacts
  • A review of CBCT applications in 3D printing process.
  • An overview of the DICOMS manipulation and interpretation to avoid misdiagnosis.
  • File types and techniques for exporting, packaging, and archiving.

Afternoon:

Applications of Intra-Oral scanning

  • Discussion on IOS scanners on the market their pros and cons
  • Learn how to use the IOS
  • Learn all the possibilities of IOS: case setup, scanning strategy, scanning of models
  • learn how to do data clean up and analysis

ExoPlan design – A Hands-on Approach (first part)

  • Discuss what ExoPlan is and how it will allow us to incorporate both surgical guide design and also abutment/crown design
  • Talk about Abutment Design
  • Talk about Crown Design
  • ExoPlan – Importing both CBCT and Surface Scan data
  • ExoPlan – Clean up and align the scan data
  • ExoPlan – Define Panoramic Curve
  • ExoPlan – Define Mandibular Nerve Canals
  • ExoPlan – Backward Planning (place model teeth) / Virtual Teeth Placement
  • ExoPlan – Define Density Threshold (reduce bone / flesh shown) 

April 16th : Manufacturing

  • ExoPlan – Saving scenes midway through planning
  • ExoPlan – Expert mode vs Wizard mode
  • ExoPlan – Approval of Planning
  • ExoPlan – Surgical guide design
  • ExoPlan – Surgical protocol

Afternoon:

DentalCAD Design: Let’s apply what we have learned!

  • Discuss order form that was created with ExoPlan and discuss how this will set you up for DentalCAD
  • ExoCAD DentalCAD – Abutment Design
  • ExoCAD DentalCAD – Crown Design
  • Use of different printers and overview of available materials for 3D printing.
  • Printing the Surgical Guide / Crowns and post processing
  • Mill out abutment from possible pre-milled abutment blank in-house
  • Send out abutment to be milled by LAB / Milling Center
  • Conclusion
